Sotomayor Houses

Sotomayor Houses is a public housing development located in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City. It is part of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), which is the largest public housing authority in North America.

Sotomayor Houses were constructed in 1975 and are named after Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who grew up in the nearby Bronxdale Houses and went on to become the first Latina Supreme Court Justice in United States history. The development consists of five buildings that are primarily mid-rise apartment buildings, covering an area of approximately 4.2 acres.

The apartments in Sotomayor Houses are subsidized by the government and are intended for individuals and families with low incomes. The development includes a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units. Amenities within the development include community centers, playgrounds, and outdoor recreational spaces.

Over the years, Sotomayor Houses have faced various challenges related to maintenance, safety, and security. In recent years, NYCHA has been working on initiatives to address these concerns, including upgrading infrastructure, improving safety measures, and enhancing resident services.

In addition to serving as a home for many families, Sotomayor Houses have also played an important role in the community. The development has hosted various events and programs, including a summer youth employment program, community centers, and health clinics. NYCHA has been working with community organizations and other stakeholders to improve the quality of life for residents and ensure that the development remains a safe and vibrant place to live.
